I'm sure you all know how this works! This is a ~How's My Driving~ post. I have been playing Ada for quite a while, but I'm always interested in improving. This post is here for you to share your feelings about my playing. Whether it's technical, such as comments or constructive criticism of my writing itself or about my characterization, it's all welcome here.

Anon is enabled, however, keep in mind that constructive criticism is what I'm looking for here, to see ways in which I can improve.

Please and thank you <3

Character Name: Ada Vessalius
Canon: Pandora Hearts
Canon Point: manga; Post Chapter 54; after 10 days in Prayer's Pass
Background/History: Our story begins...

Previous Game History: Ada spent ten days in Prayer's Pass between her chosen canon point and her arrival in Haven. The premise of the game was, ironically, a game. One in which a large number of people came together - some with people they knew and some alone - and were given a room and a role. Ada's given role was 'Hunter'. She was given a 'choice' and 'incentive', and was also sworn to 'secrecy' on the matter. She was not allowed to indicate herself or others as Hunters, and was meant to indicate others as Hunters. The Hunters were allowed one kill a night and during the day, a trial was held in which everyone voted and the person recieving the most votes was killed.

On top of this, certain prey and certain hunters had special roles that allowed them special advantages. For example, the prey had investigative roles and protective roles. And the Hunters had a few roles of their own including a Viper who could poison prey.

There was also a third group - Scavengers - which held no allegience and could attack either side. The hunters moved in a pack while the prey were initially completely clueless as to who was what other than their own role. The hunters' goal was to kill the prey until the number was less than their own or until none were left. The goal was to try to implicate prey and stave suspicion off of themselves. And for a while things went somewhat well... or at least as well as it could in a game where they were forced to kill one another. But of course, tides change, and they did for the Hunters and badly.

Ada comes from day ten, after spending what seems like a very long time in the game. At this point more people are dead than alive, there are six hunters and thirteen prey remaining. The scavangers were all killed. She knows she's not likely to survive the trial; after a plan had gone very, very wrong and implicated her practically beyond repair. Her emotions are on a rollercoaster, and though it had only been a few days, it's put a lot of stress on her and changed her both for good and for worse in different ways.

Prayer's Pass brought her to a level of desperation unlike anything she had known. Over time it built up her fears as well as guilts. Despite being honest about her feelings; Critter's rules and her desire to win for the team forced her to lie on a number of occasions - something she was not proud of at all. It also forced her to realize she would have to hurt people she cared about and not be able to do anything about it.

Most notable of her guilts was the death of her only canonmate - Elliot Nightray; who was innocent but lynched at the trial on day three for his silence; other players finding that suspicious and voting for him, believing he could be a wolf. She had been powerless to stop him from being voted out and powerless to save him. And she saw his dead body fall from the roof before her very eyes - a vision that will never really go away. She holds herself accountable for that, despite there really being nothing she could have done; Critter himself mentioning that he would have killed him if the voters hadn't.

But while she put a fair share of blame on her own shoulders, she never particularly guilted anyone else their actions; whether it was harmful to her or not. She didn't guilt the players for playing, but the game itself.

She grew to appreciate life more in Prayer's Pass; but to equally fear death all the more - not as much for herself; but for the group as a whole. Each death took a toll on her. It left her at times so emotionally exhausted that she was tempted to give herself up to fate. The whole time she questioned her ability to be of use to the hunters and when her fate was sealed, it left her with a feeling of burden that she couldn't shake - that she hadn't carried her share of the weight for the team despite having tried her hardest (while still making too many mistakes).

Ada was also chosen to appear at some of the deaths and take part. While she never killed at night, she considers it the same, as she was present for two - that of a young boy named Luke and the other of Ukraine. One was a poisoning with milk and the other - disembowling. Neither fast and both massively unpleasant for their own reasons.

But no matter how bad things got, or how people turned on her... she never stopped caring about the group as a whole. While she struggled with guilt and uncertainty - the one thing she remained certain of was that she cared for everyone she had met here. She was emotionally, very attached to people and as such, hurt twice as much by the constant death that resulted from the game playing out as it was meant to.

The exact point she is taken from is before her trial - a point where she knows she is going to die, but hasn't yet. It is also before she acts upon her promise to her team and shoots America (the prey's 'Caregiver'; a role that allows him to save people). But not before she had resolved to do it.

Personality: Ada was born the younger of Zai Vessalius’ two children, but later became the elder after her brother Oz spent his time trapped in the Abyss. But Ada wasn’t so much raised by her father as she was by her Uncle Oscar. Nonetheless she was raised to be a proper noblewoman. That meant attending social gatherings and creating and maintaining a good image fit for the Vessalius Dukedom. In reality, Ada is a genuinely sweet-natured girl. She does not seem to allow herself to be personally affected by her social status either way personality-wise. Rather, Ada is an honest person whose face and eyes easily portray what she’s feeling. She is also rather intelligent; enough so to have earned the status of prefect in the private school which she attends. But it isn’t simply book smarts. Ada is also a very perceptive and empathetic young woman, who isn’t so easily fooled. The people around her mean a great deal to her and she worries a great deal for those who are closest to her. For those closest to her, she is willing to risk her life fighting for them even if she lacks the skills and abilities to do so. Even so, if there is a way to avoid fighting, that would be her preference, being a rather peaceful hearted young woman. That makes her also a rather ideal mediator when tensions arise.

Even when things are darkest, there is always a spark of optimism that remains with Ada, that drives her to try her best to do whatever she can in that situation to help. And while she is a fairly obedient young girl in most things, she continues to see the man she loves despite her family not accepting him, proving that she also knows when to stand firm in her own beliefs and for the sake of the things she truly wants. She doesn’t act blindly, but rather, wishes to act in the best interest of the people she cares about, as well as her own best interests, although she seems to often put other’s interests before her own.

She can be easily flustered by certain things such as close contact, flattering speech, and affectionate words or actions. But she is also a fairly affectionate young woman who sees and accepts both the good and bad in people. While she is rather perceptive of other people, she isn’t always right and can jump to conclusions when excited. However, she isn’t the type to judge people on appearances, first impressions, or the words of others. She looks at people closely and judges them for herself, looking deeper than the surface. While Ada tries to always see the best in others, she isn’t blind to people’s faults either, but rather finds ways of accepting those things.

But it is because her image is so important that her relationship with the man she loves and wishes to always be beside is not recognized and why she must hide her love for the occult. Her hobby of studying and immersing herself into the occult is a secret she shares with almost no one and her things are confined to the basement of the secondary mansion her Uncle gave to her; out of the eyes of the public. While it seems she receives things from her classmates on the subject, it seems to be something she hides quite diligently from most. She doesn’t even tell the man she’s dating despite having thought he was also interested in such things, until provoked to show her ‘true self’. And when he reacts badly at first, you can see that there is a part of her that fears her true self being rejected by the people she cares about, which could explain why she’s so reluctant to share it with others. But even so, it’s shown that she had always had some interest in dark, unusual stories even when she was a little kid, listening to stories that were normally meant to frighten children into behaving.

Because she worries for the people closes to her so and also because she lost her brother at such a young age, Ada doesn’t want to be alone. When her brother disappeared into the Abyss, even though she was young, she too did what she could to try and help find a way to save him. And when he returned the same age he had been when he left and she had grown older than him, she feared that he wouldn’t recognize her, or that he might reject her.

So despite being so strong willed, Ada is actually rather fearful of not being accepted. That and the fear of losing those close to her are probably her two greatest fears. While on the other hand, danger itself doesn’t scare her nearly as much, despite her lack of strength or fighting ability.

Abilities/Powers: Ada is without any form of 'special' abilities. She's a simple, aristocratic human girl. Though you might include her uncanny ability to attract and make friends with cats to be an unusual 'ability'. Beyond that, she is weak but also has an... intense love of the occult, and is familiar with any manner of hexes, magics, and paranormal activities. That includes knowledge of how to perform tarot card readings as well as other basic forms of witchcraft. No she is - as far as we know - not capable of anything supernatural, however it is noted that she does believe in these sorts of things and could be convinced to try them regardless of the chance for success. Granted, as it is a hidden part of her personality, you have to be someone special for her to confess it to you and show you.

Items/Weapons: She has a gun from Prayer's Pass - one that is uniquely designed to kill no matter where the person is shot, but holds only one round and can then not be used again. She also has her journal from Prayer's Pass, which holds information on her role as well as her own notes and a series of notes she had penned out for others - written to indicate that if they were being read... she was dead. Lastly she carries a small purse in which she holds both journal and weapon.

Sample Entry: Sample Threads from Hunter's Game

Sample Entry Two: Something feels wrong when Ada feels herself begin to stir. In the fuzziness of first waking, she can hear the faint sound of an alarm clock - something she hasn't heard in over a week. It's the first morning of at least nine that she hasn't woken up in Cabin R, room 4 surrounded by the strange smell of spoiled milk to a sterilized room unlike any of the others in Prayer's Pass. She does not wake automatically with the feeling of dread and prepared to make herself eat a meager breakfast and make her way to the Graveyard where she spends so much of her free time preparing memorials for the dead and speaking to them without answer. No, that sound wakes her this morning and breaks the usual cycle early, before she even considers what usually comes after. She groans and squints and rubs her eyes and delayed, she feels the dread sink in.

When had she fallen asleep? Night hadn't fallen yet in Prayer's Pass... in fact, the last thing she remembered was the Trial, which was in full swing. She ran over the events of the trial, from the burning of Mister Togami that made her pass out briefly, to her final statements at the trial - a mixture of innocence and guilt... but that was as far as she remembered. She remembered thinking all too clearly that she had to shoot America - that she had no choice, and that it was the last thing she could do to help ensure her team would win that horrid game. But while Ada remembers thinking it so clearly, she can't remember doing it.

The chilling thought that comes next is that someone beat her to it - that their plan had been anticipated and she had been killed first before she could complete her final task. But no matter how she strained her memory nothing came... no pain that indicated her death... no exclaimations of shock or anger... nothing.

She then comes to look at the room around her and notes that is it not the cabin room she remembers. It is one with five other beds and she is not alone. If she's dead then death is a strange place. Covering her mouth to stifle any noises of surprise, she climbs out of the bed and catches the sight of the city beyond the window; one that looks decrepit - crumbling.

"Ha...ven..." She reads, eyes ghosting over the billboard and her eyes widen. It clicks that something strange has once again happened and recalls places that her friends had mentioned being in before they came to Prayer's Pass.

It clarifies at least that she's not in Prayer's Pass anymore, and she has a lot to figure out.

Panicking, she goes to her bag and looks through it to find that indeed she hasn't come unprepared. With her still is the gun... it's single bullet still clearly in place... and her journal. Both are proof that the things she remembered were real; not just some terrible nightmare. And the gun was proof that she hadn't shot America and that this had somehow happened before the Trial had been concluded - ideas that only left her with more questions.

But not questions that couldn't be answered.

Like in Prayer's Pass, she would have to adapt and try her hardest to find answers and somehow... come out on top.

Sitting back on her bed, she waited; hoping that the others who were waking up now, could help her start finding those answers.

PROJECTED CLASS: Mage. Without question, Ada is meant to wield magic. Her love for the occult will drive Ada to choose magic first. In her mind, nothing else comes close. It will be a class that she will love and have great interest in and a strong desire to work at it and grow more proficient with it. It also suits her for the fact that she’s not strong physically, although her personality and canon point would drive her to want to choose something she can fight with. It’s likely she’ll choose Shaman when given the next choice.

SAMPLES
FIRST PERSON SAMPLE: threads

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE The desk was covered with an assortment of books, all gathered single-handedly by the eager looking girl preparing to sit herself down behind the desk. At a glance, there appeared to be no less than ten books of varying sizes and titles at her disposal, but Ada knew the real number was twelve. In her mind, she was… ‘starting small’. But in all, she had already come a far way from the dazed and confused girl who landed herself in Castle Dyspros, blankly staring at the ornate doors and tracing the pattern with one finger as she tried to piece things together.

In the time between when she had gathered all the details and now, Ada had made a number of decisions. The first was that she wanted to be here for the time being. And the second most notable was that she wanted to join one of the guilds in order to strengthen herself. With her last memories before she came here on repeat in her mind, she knew that she wanted to do something… to change in some way so that she could go back just a little more able and a little less powerless. That was the wish she sought to see granted.

Simple it may be, but it was as important as anything to her. And it was as much for the people she loved as it was for herself.

And when she had the choice - she couldn’t say no the prospect of the Mages’ Guild. The moment she heard of it, her heart was decided on it. The giddy way she paged through the books on magic attested to her great enthusiasm. “I’ve studied this kind of thing for so long… but who ever imagined I’d really be doing this?” She giggles happily and turns the page once more, eyes scanning over the page with wonder. “Vincent would be so shocked if he knew.” Again, she giggles, but this time because she can almost imagine the look on his face.

Too bad she’s blind to just how much horror would be (poorly) hidden behind his surprise.

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday.

[This girl is practically beaming with joy.]

As for me I...

[She giggles gleefully and holds up her hand - the hand which now has a lovely diamond and emerald encrusted ring upon it.]

I think it was the best I could have asked for.

[A pause.]

Brother... I'm getting married!

[Yes, she finally gives way to giggling and squealing out her excitement.]
purethingsonly: (Default)
I know everyone is excited for Christmas, but...

Miss Noel's birthday is also that day. I'd like to throw some kind of party for her... since she loves the holiday so much as well.

If anyone's interested, please let me know. I'm sure she'd be happy to see you all. And I could use the help.

Oh! But please don't tell her! I want it to be a surprise...
purethingsonly: (endless tears)
effects: A cheerful feeling, but a lingering sense of loneliness

and then it was gone )
purethingsonly: (and I stand amazed)
[This girl has a stack of books piled up around her. Her research is a serious welcome distraction from her brother's current state. They're all... darker books. With pictures of course. It seems that she's looking for ideas for the upcoming holidays. Decorations of course... nothing dangerous.]

I wonder what kind of decorations everyone likes...

[She turns to the device. Her main reason was to ask opinions on Halloween decorations. But also to ask if there was anyone interested in helping. Holidays were supposed to be fun, and in that case... why not drag out the fun as long as possible. It might help cheer some people up a bit.]

What do you all think? [Obviously she's put some thought into it already.] I really want to go all out... [Of course... she also worries about how much might be too much.]

If anyone would like something to do... I'd really like the extra help. [A fun way to pass the time, as it were.]
purethingsonly: (I've got darkness and fears to appease)
Effects: A sense of longing and hopelessness that turns to a bit of anxiousness and excitement with a few moments of an unsure feeling.

[There's an odd scent in the air. Burning incense. Not a normal scent to burn either. What is it? You might not want to know. But there is a girl lighting candles in a dim little basement of a room with a hopeful smile on her fact that seems to like it. There are a number of materials scattered about.

Preparations for a summoning ritual.

There is something utterly dark and magical about the items and the preparations in general.]

I want to see him again...

[She doesn't say who at first, but he's foremost in her thoughts.]

Vincent...

[The sound of her voice is a bit unsure, and still it is longing.]

I have so many questions I want to ask you...

[And she goes back to her ritual, thinking to herself. It's not until the ritual is just about complete that she wakes up with a start.]

[The Dreamberry is seated next to Ada, who can be seen picking and studying flowers in the field. She looks rather happy about it, humming softly to herself.

While she has a number of different flowers gathered in a small bouquet at her side, she still seems determined.
]

I wonder what sort of flower Miss Vanessa would like.

[She hums thoughtfully to herself.]

I have to do something to thank her for agreeing to teach me.

[Her eyes finally rest on a beautiful red flower. The vibrant color of the flower makes her think of Vanessa in a way. It's an amaryllis, she remembers, after a long moment of thought.]

Maybe this one. I wonder if she'll like it. I hope so.

[Ada happily plucks the flowers, careful to preserve the stems the same way she watched Vanessa.]
